The conference

The 5th Heron Island Conference, organized by Curt Wentrup and Craig Williams (The University of Queensland), was held at the Heron Island Resort as part of the "ISRIUM" or "CORIUM" series of international symposia or conferences on reactive intermediates and unusual molecules. The series started in 1978 in Geneva (EUCHEM conference on electron deficient reactive intermediates (Jefford, Wentrup). Recent successor events were at Vienna 2000 (Brinker), Nara 2001 (Tomioka), Ascona 2002 (Bally, Chen), Reykjavik 2003 (Gudmundsdottir), Edinburgh 2005 (McNab), Honolulu 2005 (Moss, Tomioka, Warmuth, Wentrup), Porquerolles, France 2006 (Aycard, Borget), Heron Island 2007 (Wentrup, Williams), Ascona 2007 (Bally, Chem), and Liblice near Prague 2009 (Michl). Previous Heron Island Conferfences were in 1991, 1994, 2004, and 2007(see full list of previous conferences under the 'Participants' tab). The next ISRIUM conference will be at Pacifichem, Honolulu December 17-18, 2010 (Abe, Leigh, Platz). The next Heron Island Conference (Heron6) is planned for 2013.

We thank The University of Queensland Professors Al McEwan (Head, School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences), Stephen Walker (Dean of Science), Max Lu (DVC Research), Mick McManus and Anna Ciccarelli (DVCs International), DKSH Australia Pty Ltd, Sigma-Aldrich Australia Pty Ltd, the RACI Organic Division, the CSIRO, and the Australian Journal of Chemistry for their support of the Heron5 conference.

Prizes for the best student poster presentations, sponsored by the Australian Journal of Chemistry. were awarded to Mie Højer Vilhelmsen (University of Copenhagen) and Jonathan Faber (University of Queensland).
